Start your day with breakfast as usual — or, if you’re up before dawn, take advantage of the beautiful sunrise for photos. The morning trek ascends from the thinning heath zone into a barren, lunar-like landscape as you approach the broad saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. During the lunch stop, and later as you walk across this unexpectedly vast saddle, you’ll be able to study the route up Kibo that you will attempt in just a few hours. Stay alert for any symptoms of altitude sickness. Note that there is no running water at Kibo Huts.
