Mount Meru is a dream destination for many adventure lovers. The climb delivers a rare, untamed wilderness experience as you trek toward its summit. Walking along the steadily rising slopes, you get to soak in stunning vistas and distinct vegetation — far removed from the noise and rush of everyday life.
We drive from Arusha to Momela Gate. After a short registration at the Gate our walk will begin with full armed ranger escorting us, simply we can see along the way the wild animals including elephants, zebras, and giraffe, monkeys, antelope, and often elephants along the route. Dinner and overnight night at Miriakamba Hut.
The trek from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle beneath Little Meru is relatively short in distance but involves a steep ascent. The trail ascends gradually along the ridge, offering stunning views of the Meru Crater and the dramatic Ash Cone. After a hot lunch at Saddle Hut, you may opt for a brief hike up to the peak of Little Meru (3,820m) to enjoy breathtaking sunset views.
You will have dinner and spend the night at Saddle Hut.
The ascent begins very early, around 1:30 a.m., with a steep climb to Rhino Point (3,800 m) and then onward to Cobra Point (4,350 m). We arrive at the summit (4,566 m) in time to watch the sunrise, and on clear days you may spot Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds. The last stretch of the climb follows a dramatic narrow ridge between the vertical inner cliffs and the gently sloping outer crater wall. After a brief rest and brunch at Saddle Hut, we continue descending all the way to the Momella Gate. Your transfer vehicle will be waiting at the gate to drive you back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.
Start your day with breakfast as usual — or, if you’re up before dawn, take advantage of the beautiful sunrise for photos. The morning trek ascends from the thinning heath zone into a barren, lunar-like landscape as you approach the broad saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. During the lunch stop, and later as you walk across this unexpectedly vast saddle, you’ll be able to study the route up Kibo that you will attempt in just a few hours. Stay alert for any symptoms of altitude sickness. Note that there is no running water at Kibo Huts.
